Four Hours of Sweeping Won’t Make You Rich – Zoomlion Urges Youth to Add Side Hustles

Emma Adwoa Appiaa Osei-Duah, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has encouraged young Ghanaians engaged in the company’s sanitation programmes not to rely solely on the four-hour sweeping jobs as their main source of income.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Osei-Duah explained that the sanitation initiative was originally designed to keep young people productively engaged while they transition from school to more permanent opportunities. “This programme is not meant to be a lifelong job,” she emphasized. “It’s a stepping stone to something greater.”

She pointed out that some participants, particularly women, have adopted a productive routine by sweeping early in the morning before opening their shops or engaging in other trades. “They love to sweep… they do that quickly and then go and open their shop,” she noted, urging others to follow similar examples.

“You can’t work for just four hours and expect to become wealthy. You need to move beyond this. Add a side hustle, learn a trade, or start a small business,” she advised.

Osei-Duah compared the mindset of young Ghanaians to that of those living abroad, highlighting how many overseas workers take on two or three jobs to make ends meet. She encouraged local youth to emulate that work ethic by diversifying their income streams and seeking opportunities for personal and financial growth.

Her message was clear: use the Zoomlion job as a foundation, but build a bigger future with additional efforts and ambition.
