ICS Suggests Water-Based Transport to Ease Ghana’s Road Pressure

The Institute of Community Sustainability (ICS) has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to champion the development of a sustainable water transport system as a strategic solution to Ghana’s growing road congestion and traffic-related accidents.

In a statement, the Institute highlighted the untapped potential of Ghana’s coastal and riverine geography, calling for the introduction of a passenger boat transport system that would link key coastal towns such as Retail, Tema, James Town, Senya, Winneba, Apam, Saltpond, Cape Coast, and Takoradi.

According to the ICS, a well-structured river and sea transport network would offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to road travel, easing the burden on the country’s overused highways. The initiative, they noted, would particularly benefit students, traders, and event-goers who frequently travel between these towns.

“In addition to being a practical solution to traffic woes, this initiative aligns with broader sustainability goals and would create jobs, stimulate local economies, and enhance regional connectivity.

“We urge the former President and all relevant stakeholders to consider this innovative approach as part of Ghana’s broader transportation and sustainability strategy,” the statement stressed.

The ICS believes that with the right investment and political will, a modern water transport system could transform regional connectivity and serve as a model for other West African nations.
