The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has arrested Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The arrest occurred on Tuesday shortly after Chairman Wontumi concluded a session at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra, where he had been summoned for questioning.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Ashanti Regional NPP Communications Director, Paul Yandoh, confirmed the arrest and expressed concern over the treatment of Chairman Wontumi during the process. According to Yandoh, Wontumi is currently in EOCO custody and has been denied access to his legal counsel.
“One of his lawyers, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who was with him at the time of arrest, was prevented from following him,” Yandoh claimed.
The specific reasons behind EOCO’s decision to detain Chairman Wontumi have not yet been made public. However, it follows his appearance before the CID for further questioning regarding alleged involvement in illegal mining activities. The allegations include unauthorized mining operations in forest reserves and encroachment into protected areas without the required permits.
Authorities have not released an official statement detailing the charges or the scope of the investigation, and it remains unclear whether formal charges will be filed.
Chairman Wontumi’s arrest has sparked concern among party supporters and raised questions about the potential political implications. Legal representatives and party officials are reportedly working to secure his release and clarify the circumstances surrounding his detention.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
