Ghana's power crisis is back in the spotlight as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) faces tough questions today from Parliament’s Energy Committee. The focus is on deepening power outages and the mysterious disappearance of 23 containers filled with essential electrical equipment worth GH₵12 million.
The Energy Minister, John Jinapor, has sounded the alarm, describing the energy sector’s situation as alarming, with growing debts, erratic power supply, and stalled reforms. Today’s hearing, held at the Peduase Valley Resort in the Eastern Region, is expected to address these critical issues.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) and Bui Power Authority are also set to appear. JoyNews Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent Kwaku Asante reports that ECG must account for the ongoing blackouts that have disrupted life and business across the country. Issues of financial mismanagement, operational inefficiencies, and calls for the privatisation of electricity distribution and revenue collection are also on the table.
VRA will be grilled on the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage, which displaced over 35,000 people in 300 communities in the Volta and Eastern Regions. Meanwhile, the Bui Power Authority will present its roadmap for a 5-year expansion aimed at adding 400 megawatts of solar-hybrid capacity by 2028.
The nation waits for answers and accountability in the face of deepening energy instability.
