Wontumi to Be Arrested on Monday If He ........... – Attorney-General

The Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that charges against Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, have been completed and signed.

Dr. Ayine disclosed that Mr. Boasiako has been directed to report to Accra on Monday, October 6, 2025, to formally have the charges read to him. He cautioned that failure to appear would lead to his immediate arrest.

“The charges against Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been signed. He should be here on Monday. If he does not come by then, I will order his arrest, and his charges will be read to him,” Dr. Ayine stated during President John Dramani Mahama’s engagement with civil society organisations on illegal mining in Accra on Friday, October 3.

The move follows ongoing investigations into the operations of Akonta Mining. The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, recently confirmed that the probe is still active, with one other person linked to the company already arrested.

She explained that Chairman Wontumi had previously cooperated with investigators but had recently delayed further appearances due to ill health, a claim supported by his lawyer. “The investigations are actively ongoing, and the final outcome will be made public,” DCOP Donkor assured.

The CID has also taken statements from a business associate of Mr. Boasiako, identified as Akuoko, in connection with the case.

Chairman Wontumi was first invited by the CID on May 26, 2025, where he appeared with his legal team, including former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and former Asante-Akim North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi.

He has consistently denied any involvement in illegal mining. Speaking on his own media platform, Wontumi TV, he said:

“I am not into galamsey. I have a large-scale company under which Akonta Mining operates. I have all the required documents, and I will make them available. I am prepared to cooperate fully with investigations. The law should work.”
