Gov’t Allocates GHC130 Million for La General Hospital Reconstruction – Health Minister

The government has released GHC130 million to restart the long-delayed reconstruction of the La General Hospital, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced.

Speaking during a working visit to the project site on Thursday, October 9, 2025, Mr. Akandoh said the allocation demonstrates government’s renewed commitment to completing the facility, which has been stalled for years.

The La General Hospital redevelopment project began after the demolition of the old structure in 2020. However, progress stalled for more than three years due to lack of funding. Construction resumed last year, but without a dedicated financial allocation until now.

“I have engaged the Minister of Finance, and he has assured me that work will resume fully on site. To be clear, an allocation of about GHC130 million has been made for this project. Government is not taking it lightly at all,” the Health Minister affirmed.

Mr. Akandoh urged the contractors to maintain diligence and transparency in their work, assuring them that the government is committed to processing payments on time.

“If you face any challenge, please communicate it. It wouldn’t be fair for you to have difficulties without your employer knowing. Let’s continue working in good faith so we can finish this project. Rest assured, this is something very dear to my heart,” he added.

The Minister was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Rita Odoley Sowah, the Municipal Chief Executive, and officials from the Ministry of Health.

Formerly known as the La Polyclinic, the La General Hospital serves the people of La and surrounding communities in Accra. The ongoing redevelopment aims to transform it into a modern 160-bed facility equipped to provide comprehensive healthcare services.
