TikToker Sentenced to Seven Months for Death Threats Against President and Officials

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced David Kwodow Prah Afful, a TikTok personality known online as Kwame Nkrumah II, to seven months in prison for issuing death threats against President John Dramani Mahama, Members of Parliament, and other government officials.

Afful was charged with threat of death and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace after appearing in a viral TikTok livestream where he threatened to attack public officials if he had access to weapons. He pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness from government officials during his court appearance.

Arrest and charges

The Ghana Police Service arrested Afful on Saturday, September 13, at his hideout near Kasoa Market around 2:20 p.m. His arrest followed the circulation of a livestream in which he allegedly threatened to kill government officials, journalists, and civil servants using official green-number-plated vehicles.

He also reportedly threatened to burn marketplaces and incite others to commit similar acts.

Police statement

In a statement after the sentencing, police emphasized their commitment to protecting free expression but warned that speech that incites violence, insecurity, or public disorder will not be tolerated.
