Member of Parliament for Akwapim North, Sammi Awuku, has accused the Mahama-led government of deliberately targeting opposition figures and their supporters through what he described as the selective application of the law.
Speaking at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) YÉ›n Suro Ahunahuna demonstration in Accra on September 23, Awuku alleged that the administration was resorting to intimidation tactics to weaken the opposition. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. The selective application of the rule of law in our country is sickening,” he declared.
He criticised what he sees as a double standard in how political actors are treated, citing cases where members of the ruling party allegedly face minimal consequences for inflammatory statements, while opposition leaders are harshly sanctioned for less provocative remarks.

“A Vice Chairman of the ruling party can make incendiary threats against opposition figures, only to be called over tea or coffee and released on bail. Yet, when a regional chairman of the opposition makes comments deemed offensive, he is thrown behind bars with draconian bail conditions,” Awuku argued.
Commending the resilience of young NPP members, Awuku stressed that the party would not sit back while its leaders are silenced. “I’m proud that the youth of our party have risen to resist oppression and are speaking out against injustice, harassment, and intimidation. We will not allow any deliberate attempt to gag opposition leaders,” he warned.
