Randy Abbey Sues Abronye for Defamation, Demands GHS 20m in Damages

Acting Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD and veteran broadcaster, Dr. Randy Abbey, has filed a defamation suit against outspoken politician and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, seeks GHS 20 million in damages over what Dr. Abbey describes as false, malicious, and defamatory statements made by Abronye during a public broadcast and widely circulated on social media.

According to the court filings, Abronye accused Dr. Abbey of misusing state resources and engaging in corrupt practices in his role at COCOBOD. Among the claims was an allegation that Dr. Abbey transported a personal chair in multiple Land Cruisers from Accra to cocoa farms because he refused to use seats provided by farmers. Abronye also alleged that Abbey manipulated internal appointments to enable embezzlement of funds.

The suit, filed by COCOBOD’s Legal Department, argues that the allegations have severely damaged Dr. Abbey’s reputation, exposing him to public ridicule and contempt. He is therefore seeking:

  • A declaration that Abronye’s statements are defamatory.

  • A full retraction and unqualified apology published across all platforms.

  • Removal of all defamatory content from online and broadcast platforms.

  • General, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GHS 20 million.

  • A perpetual injunction restraining Abronye from making further defamatory remarks.

  • Legal costs and any other relief the court deems fit.

Dr. Abbey insists the accusations are entirely false and aimed at tarnishing his professional image. His legal team emphasized that political commentary and public discourse must be rooted in truth and responsibility, particularly when directed at individuals in public service.

As of now, Abronye has not publicly responded to the suit.

This is not the first time the NPP regional chairman has faced legal action of this nature. In July 2025, Hugh Clement A. Brown, Acting CEO of the Forestry Commission, also sued Abronye for defamation, seeking GHS 20 million in damages.
