Galamsey Fight: NAIMOS Arrests Four Soldiers Over Illegal Raids in Tarkwa Nsuaem

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested four military officers accused of staging unauthorised raids at Simpa Junction in the Tarkwa Nsuaem District of the Western Region.

The arrest, carried out on Monday, August 18, followed a tactical operation in which the task force seized the soldiers’ weapons and equipment. The officers were allegedly conducting illegal activities in the area under the guise of security operations.

According to NAIMOS, the suspects are linked to outlawed groups that carry out unapproved anti-illegal mining exercises while posing as National Security operatives—a trend that has been reported in other parts of the country.

The four soldiers have since been handed over to the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces at Apremdo, Takoradi, for investigations and disciplinary action.

Authorities say the development will help protect legitimate mining companies and individuals operating within the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

Meanwhile, NAIMOS has pledged to intensify joint operations with other state security agencies in line with government’s renewed efforts to combat illegal mining and its destructive impact on the environment.
