Government Committed to Ending Galamsey – Defence Minister Reaffirms

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has reaffirmed the government’s strong resolve to end illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, citing firm political will and a coordinated national strategy. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series press briefing at Jubilee House, Dr. Boamah stressed that the fight against illegal mining is being waged with renewed urgency and purpose.

“We are not out of the woods yet as a nation, but there is hope because there is political will at the very top,” he said. “The Ghana Armed Forces have played significant roles in the fight against illegal mining.”

Strategic Overhaul and Institutional Reforms

Dr. Boamah revealed that the government has completed a comprehensive review of its anti-galamsey efforts, resulting in key reforms designed to enhance coordination and long-term sustainability. Central to these reforms is the establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, which now oversees and streamlines all government actions related to the fight against illegal mining.

“This Secretariat is a product of that review exercise,” he explained. “It ensures we are not only reactive, but also proactive and structured in our operations.”

Reclaiming Forest Reserves

The Minister applauded the Ghana Armed Forces for their success in reclaiming multiple forest reserves that had been overrun by illegal miners. These areas, previously inaccessible to forest guards due to security concerns, are now being restored.

“The recovery of several forest reserves, which our forest guards could not even venture into, was led by the Ghana Armed Forces,” Dr. Boamah stated.

Ghana Navy’s Role in Operation Halt II

Dr. Boamah also commended the Ghana Navy for its support in Operation Halt II, a major initiative aimed at stopping illegal mining activities along the River Ankobra in the Western and Western North Regions.

“In Operation Halt II, the Navy supported land forces to combat illegal mining along the River Ankobra, which had suffered years of environmental degradation,” he noted.

Galamsey Fight is a National Security Priority

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Boamah underscored the government’s unrelenting focus on environmental protection, declaring the anti-galamsey campaign a top national security and development priority.

“Our stance is unwavering,” he said. “We see this as a critical issue for sustainable development and for safeguarding our natural resources for future generations.”
