Nyaho-Tamakloe hints of new party to break 27-year NPP, NDC duopoly

A new political party could spring up ahead of the 2020 general elections to challenge Ghana’s duopoly, the governing NPP and the opposition NDC.

Former Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe drooped hints of this when he spoke to theghanareport.com in an exclusive interview last Wednesday.

“We will get on board,” he said on the sidelines of the launch of a book, ‘The Fourth John’ by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure.

Justifying the need for a new political party to taste power in Ghana, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe explained: “it appears as if the political class we see now have rarely disappointed Ghanaians so if there is a new movement coming up then definitely some of us will talk about it.”

The former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah in September mentioned moves to outdoor in new political party.

He told theghanareport.com, he is in talks with like-minded high-profile Ghanaians to lead the movement.

“The country is sick, we need a new crop of people and as I speak to you now, we are forming that new movement,” he stated.

“Myself and the other members are people who have the interest of Ghana at heart and most importantly, people who want to leave a lasting legacy. We are old so we are not fighting for ourselves but for the future generation because where we are now is very bad. Everybody is frustrated and angry, ” he has lamented.

Ghana under the 4th republic has been governed by only two political parties, NPP and NDC in a political musical chairs that has lasted 27 years and counting.

The NPP has governed for 11 years while the NDC has been in the driving seat for a total of 16 years. No party has ever can close to upsetting this duopoly.

Two political parties were certified by the Electoral Commission in November to bring to 27, the number of registered political parties in Ghana.

They are the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), founded by the Head Pastor and General Overseer of the Life Assembly Worship Centre, Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrew and Power Unity Party (PUP), founded by Head Pastor of True Way International Chapel, Prophet Eliyehu Boating.
